Field Trip to Star News

Today we went on a field trip with our homeschool group to Star News, Wilmington's newspaper. We were given a behind the scenes tour by Mr Si Cantwell, a columnist with the paper! First, we went in the news room (where they write and plan the layout). There are 3 HUGE flat screen tv's on the wall and cubicles everywhere with writers typing away on their computers. We learned how they handle their online site and Mr Cantwell told us that eventually, newspapers may go totally online.

Next, we visited the room where they store the large rolls of paper. These rolls are almost 1 ton and they go thru over 35 rolls a day! We met "Fonzi" who drives the fork lift that gets the rolls down to be taken to the printing room (he demonstrated this for us). Here are Miller and Bailey standing beside one of those rolls.

Then we went up some very narrow stairs to the room where the news is printed.

Then back down the very narrow stairs to the room where the papers are put together, ready to be loaded and delivered. This is a very loud room!

The final stop was in advertising and classifieds. We ended our tour with a picture in front of the building with Mr Si Cantwell (the man in the back).

We really enjoyed this field trip! It was very informative and I'm so glad the kids got to see how a newspaper is made from beginning to end.
