Flat Head and Physical Therapy

Last week Madelyn had her 9 month appointment and, as always, I mentioned our concern for the flat spot on her head. For the last 7 months the doctors have said not to be concerned. She said it's strictly positional and that it will work itself out. Even though we tried some positional therapy such as tummy time and changing her position in the crib each night, it hasn't worked itself out! Well, last week the doctor said we need to "be more proactive" and referred us to a physical therapist. Today we saw the physical therapist and he said that the muscle on the right side of her neck is tight and that's why she favors that side (she always turns her head to the right when she's sleeping or really whatever she's doing). He gave us some stretching exercises to do for her and said to position her so that she has to/wants to turns her head to the left. We are going to try this for about a month and if he sees a visible difference then great! If not, then it's on to phase 2 (possibly a cranial band--YIKES!). Please pray for us, that we'll be effective in stretching that muscle in her neck, and that her head will start to round out on that side.
